SUMMARY:MEDIN Webinar: The global push for better data sharing
DESCRIPTION:The Decade Coordination Office for Ocean Data Sharing is the focal point for marine data and information management in the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. It is committed to fostering effective knowledge and information exchange\, and aims to raise awareness about data sharing\, capacity building and collaboration with Decade Actions and other entities. In this webinar we will introduce the work of the UN Ocean Decade and explore how there are overlaps between the work of MEDIN and of the Decade in building a community of practice for data sharing\, developing guidelines and data standards\, and encouraging good data stewardship practices. We will also discuss how these approaches scale into the digital ecosystem which is being built across the Decade and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO and feed an ecosystem of observation\, creation or acquisition of data to data management to forecasting and prediction to action. This work aligns with the Decade Data and Information Strategy and supports the achievement of Ocean Decade Vision 2030 goals.

SUMMARY:MEDIN Webinar: Autonomous Platform Data Management and high volume archiving at the BODC
DESCRIPTION:This talk will cover BODC data management practices for each of the three platform types including data processing\, data dissemination and how we work with the wider platform communities. Data processing has a strong focus on metadata\, applying controlled vocabularies from the NERC Vocabulary Server and for glider and ALR deployments utilising a Semantic Sensor Network (SSN) database to register sensors and platforms. There are multiple data dissemination pathways across the platforms with Argo float and glider data contributing to the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS).

SUMMARY:Scientific meeting: Marine biodiversity loss\, fishing\, and climate change
DESCRIPTION:On 8 – 9 December 2025\, a scientific discussion meeting will be held at the Royal Society in London\, on the topic of marine biodiversity loss. \nThe meeting will be led by Professor Richard Sanders from the Norwegian Research Centre\, Professor Alex Poulton from Heriot Watt University\, Professor Stephanie Henson from the National Oceanography Centre\, Dr Emma Cavan from Imperial College London and Professor Alessandro Tagliabue from the University of Liverpool. \nThe twin crises of biodiversity loss and rapid climate change are often considered as inextricably linked. This is a perspective primarily developed based on terrestrial systems. \nIn the ocean this linkage has been largely overlooked. At this meeting\, speakers and attendees will address this gap by considering the relationships between ocean biodiversity loss\, climate change and food security. \nThere will be a poster session on Monday 8 December 2025. Attendees can apply to present a poster. \nThis meeting is free to attend and is intended for researchers in relevant fields. \nAdvance registration is essential. In-person and online attendance is available. \nMore information about the speakers\, programme and how to register for this meeting can be found on the Royal Society website.

SUMMARY:Doppler Dynamics- Applied ADCP & DVL Training
DESCRIPTION:Nortek is hosting a free to attend event next month in Aberdeen. The event is called Doppler Dynamics- Applied ADCP & DVL Training it will take place on November the 25th  \nWhere– Village Hotel\, Kingswells\, Aberdeen \nTime– 8:30-5pm \nHow– Sign up here \nThe event will be split into two halves\, with the morning session focused on DVLs and subsea navigation\, and the afternoon session looking at ADCPs and how we measure currents and waves. Both sessions will be supported by external user case stories as they apply our doppler technology to support their operations\, observations and research. \nOur objective for the day is to share the latest technological developments\, how to extract the most from Accoustic doppler sensors (ADCP and DVL) and apply best practices to their operation. We will look at instrument setup\, data processing and new features. Whether you are a new user or doppler expert we are confident you will leave with an increased level of knowledge. \nAs always at our events there will be plenty of opportunities to network with industry peers and a lunch is provided.

SUMMARY:Surfacing and Mitigating the “Hidden Risks” of AI Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Learn more about the novel framework to anticipate and mitigate AI risks arising from human-AI interaction developed by the Cabinet Office Behavioural Science Team. Listen to an overview of the BR-UK AI Resources Repository and learn about the progress developing a Statement on AI by BR-UK. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \n  \nAbstract: Current AI safety discourse disproportionately centres on highly salient technical risks such as algorithm bias and hallucinations. While these concerns merit attention\, they overlook a fundamental truth we’ve learned from other safety-critical fields like aviation and healthcare: catastrophic risks often arise from the way humans interact with technology\, rather than from the technology itself. \nThe Cabinet Office Behavioural Science Team has developed a novel framework to anticipate and mitigate AI risks arising from human-AI interaction. Rather than relying exclusively on technical safeguards and disclaimers\, this methodology expands risk mitigation beyond inherent LLM limitations (e.g.\, bias\, susceptibility to jailbreaking) to mitigate those risks that emerge from well-intentioned AI use. The framework also shows how seemingly innocuous micro-level decisions accumulate to generate systemic macro risks (e.g. labour market discrimination) that would remain invisible through conventional risk assessment lenses until harms had already occurred. \nThe framework has informed the risk-managed deployment of an internal Cabinet Office AI system and carries implications for how AI risk is managed globally. The work demonstrates that effective AI governance requires expertise beyond machine learning specialists. The contemporary AI implementation landscape\, however\, continues to frame challenges predominantly through technological and economic paradigms rather than socio-technical ones. While major AI organisations employ ethicists to “align” AI with human values\, philosophical frameworks alone will be insufficient for identifying and mitigating latent behavioural risks. This oversight risks undermining the very efficiency and impact that AI promises to deliver. \nSpeakers: Holly Marquez\, Senior Behavioural Scientist\, Cabinet Office\, Dr Moira Nicolson\, Behavioural Scientist\, Cabinet Office\, Dr Amy Rodger\, BR-UK Research Fellow\, University of Edinburgh and Dr Maggie Guanyu Yang\, BR-UK Research Fellow\, UCL. \nChair:  Professor Susan Michie\, BR-UK Co-Director

SUMMARY:Training course - Spatial models in marine science using INLA and inlabru
DESCRIPTION:In this course\, we aim to teach ecologists and stock assessors how to analyse spatial data. Attendees will gain an understanding of the relevant statistical concepts/methods and how to implement them using the INLA/inlabru software. Examples will be based on fitting models to observations to investigate spatial and temporal correlations and possible associations with abiotic factors using real data\, e.g. as extracted from the DATRAS data base. \nICES HQ\, Copenhagen\, Denmark
