DESCRIPTION:For over a decade\, Digital Aerial Surveys (DAS) have become the standard method to monitor seabirds and marine mammals around offshore wind farms and much beyond. They are fast and cost-efficient. By covering large areas in short time DAS are the best option for marine wildlife monitoring. While standardization and keeping the method constant is important\, technology is advancing. New sensors\, new platforms such as drones and new analytical tools by AI offer vast options to improve existing methods. As such\, HiDef Aerial Surveying\, BioConsult SH and Biotope as the leading providers of DAS based on HiDefs bespoke video system\, are advancing the techniques and analytical methods. DESCRIPTION:The MASTS Sustainable Aquaculture Forum is excited to host this free Open Forum Session with an interesting talk on: \n~\nDeveloping a stunning system for decapod crustaceans\nSpeaker: Dr. Niki Khan\, Lead Bioscientist\, Ace Aquatec \nSince 2022\, decapod crustaceans\, such as crabs\, lobsters\, and prawns\, have been recognised by UK legislation as ‘sentient beings’. Despite this\, there has been little movement on industry regulations\, and decapod crustaceans are often treated in extreme ways. For example\, most are killed by suffocation\, chilling\, or by boiling- methods that would be unthinkable for terrestrial species. \nChange is currently being driven by consumers\, and supermarkets have accepted this change in public attitudes with increasing bias towards producers that adopt welfare focused practices\, such as electrical stunning. For producers that adopt this practice shift there is increased market access. However\, the majority of decapod production originates from small-scale businesses\, and these producers risk being locked out of the global market due to the cost and access to electrical stunning equipment.\nLarge-scale electrical stunners exist\, and on the other end of the scale\, is the Crustastun\, where a single individual is stunned at a time. These are useful in very different scenarios; either large scale production\, or individual processing such as that seen in restaurants. However\, currently\, there are no ‘in between’ solutions- something that can stun more than one individual at a time\, but doesn’t require a multi-tonne throughput. \nHere\, I will discuss the development of a small scale\, portable\, in-water electrical stunner with a 20kg batch capacity. This would be a valuable opportunity to also discuss further practical applications of such a stunner\, as well as design considerations. \n~\nRegister Here!\n~\nImages: Unsplash

Its combination of precision\, portability\, and affordability makes it especially valuable for deployment in remote or data-scarce regions.\nGETCO2\, a next-generation sealed gas exchange tank designed to provide a controlled environment for isolating and studying specific physical\, chemical\, and biological factors influencing gas exchange. It enables precise\, repeatable estimation of gas transfer velocities\, particularly in laboratory settings.\n\nTogether\, these tools form a robust\, flexible platform for probing how organic matter and other biogeochemical processes influence air–water gas exchange across a wide range of freshwater and marine systems. DESCRIPTION:In this session we are sharing insights into how fishing organisations and associations are working with government and statutory bodies to plan and prioritise competing demands such as fishing and offshore wind in our coastal waters. \nManaging the space around the UK is a difficult job\, with a rising number of marine protected areas and renewable energy developments\, it feels like areas designated for fishing are reducing in size. FITF are joined by Mike Roach from the NFFO and a number of expert speakers discussing these topics\, along with existing case studies from Scotland and Southwest England\, the mapping of fishing activities and engagement with fishing communities. \n  \nWho’s Talking? \n\nNational Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations – Mike Roach\, the Deputy Chief Executive and a background in research and representing industry in fishing associations at a regional and national level\, including the Holderness Fishing Industry Group and the Shellfish Association of Great Britain.\n\n\nScottish Fishermen’s Federation – Elena Balestri\, Senior Fisheries Policy and Science Manager\, to discuss the indirect impacts of offshore wind on fisheries ecology and fishing communities.\n\n\nCornish Fisheries Producers Organisation – Chris Ranford\, CEO\, and David Stevens\, CFPO member\, and skipper of the Crystal Sea\, who have worked closely with The Crown Estate over developments in the Celtic Sea.\n\n\nRetired Fisherman\, Independent Consultant and Thanet Fisherman’s Association – Merlin Jackson has worked with fishing fleets to support engagement with developers\, and sits on the Fisheries Liaison Offshore Wind Working Group.\n\n\nPlymouth Marine Laboratory – Claire Szostek\, Senior Scientist. The Centre is accelerating research-informed action that engages\, enables and empowers marginalised people\, to develop methods\, tools and strategies for thinking and action on sustainability. By ‘marginalised’ we mean those facing socio-economic\, infrastructural\, geographical and political inequalities that inhibit their participation in climate mitigation and adaptation\, while also increasing their vulnerability to climate change impacts. ‘Joined-up’ means bridging the gaps between myriad\, but presently disconnected\, evidence bases\, interventions and policies focused on sustainability and net zero transitions. By connecting sustainability with justice\, research with action\, and constituent knowledge producers and community beneficiaries with one another\, JUST will advance the shared evidence base and accelerate the capacity for action towards sustainable futures for all places and communities. \nJoin us for a webinar featuring keynote remarks by Julian Agyeman\, an internationally-recognised leader in the transdisciplinary field of environmental social science who developed the concept of ‘just sustainabilities’ 25 years ago. This concept\, and the work it has inspired\, has been influential to the JUST Centre’s vision. \nA panel of three JUST Centre co-investigators\, Rebecca Willis\, Stefan Bouzarovski and Lucie Middlemiss will join Julian in conversation about the history of just sustainabilities research and how we can mobilise it in the current context to shape JUST Centre’s research agenda. DESCRIPTION:This webinar will present and explain cause-consequence-response frameworks and the way these relate to managing marine\, coastal and estuarine areas. It will then show the importance of determining the footprints of activities\, pressures\, and natural and human effects and assessing cumulative effects. Following this\, it will consider the footprints of management responses and will demonstrate horizontal management across sectors and vertical management from the local to the global and vice versa. It will look at the importance of transboundary implications of marine management\, considering connectivity\, coherence\, and equivalence. Finally\, it will consider the way in which success in marine management is measured\, including indicators of success. Examples from Europe and North America will be used\, but the topics are relevant to marine areas worldwide.
