SUMMARY:MEDIN Webinar: How Controlled Vocubularies Facilitate Data Sharing and Interoperability
DESCRIPTION:An introduction to controlled vocabularies\, why they are important in describing and marking up marine datasets\, and how they can be used to support FAIR data sharing. Will introduce the different methods for finding suitable vocabulary collections and concepts\, either directly from the NERC Vocabulary Server (NVS)\, or via tools such as the SeaDataNet Hierarchical and Facet searches\, and the British Oceanographic Data Centre’s (BODC) vocabulary builder and vocabulary editor tools. Will also cover the different options for submitting new term requests to the BODC NVS team\, such as email or Github. Will introduce some of the different marine vocabulary management communities the NVS team are involved with\, such as ICES\, OBIS\, EMODnet Chemistry and stress the importance of collaboration and alignment to reduce ambiguity and duplication of effort.

SUMMARY:Online seminar - scenario-based modelling of fishers’ wellbeing in Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Understanding wellbeing in the fishing industry requires a dynamic approach that captures the complex interplay of economic\, social\, and environmental factors. This research applies scenario-based modelling to explore how targeted changes influence system behaviour and to simulate responses under diverse conditions. Building on previous cognitive mapping work with Scottish nephrops fishers\, the study applies participatory approaches and scenario testing to examine fishers’ wellbeing as a complex socio-ecological system. Using cognitive maps developed with diverse stakeholders\, advanced network analysis identifies natural clusters of wellbeing indicators based on their centrality and systemic influence. These clusters inform participatory exercises with fishers\, policymakers\, and researchers to co-create plausible socio-environmental and policy-driven scenarios. The scenarios are modelled using Mental Modeller software\, applying fuzzy logic to simulate whole-system responses\, feedback loops\, and threshold dynamics\, replicating changes in fishers’ wellbeing under real-world conditions. The analysis reveals non-linear pathways of change\, highlighting critical leverage points and emergent properties that shape resilience and vulnerability within the wellbeing system. By comparing system behaviours across scenarios\, the paper identifies patterns of systemic shifts and offers insights into the conditions that trigger transformative change\, contributing to systems thinking and informing adaptive fisheries management through a prototype decision-support tool.

SUMMARY:Training course - Assessment of the impact of trawling on seabed ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:The general objective of the course is to train scientists and practitioners in the FBIT methodology for assessing the impacts of disturbance (in particular bottom trawling) on invertebrate seabed communities at a (sub)regional scale. This benthic community trait-based methodology is widely used in ICES WGs and has underpinned ICES advice to the EU for use in the MSFD D6/D1. \nVenue – ICES Headquarters\, Copenhagen\, Denmark \nApplication deadline: 1 September

SUMMARY:2025 CIEEM Scotland Conference - Source to Sea: Working Across Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:The Source to Sea: Working Across Landscapes conference will explore the interconnectedness of lochs\, rivers\, oceans and their contributing watersheds/catchments\, emphasizing the need for integrated approaches to managing these ecosystems holistically. The Scottish Biodiversity Strategy has set an ambitious goal for Scotland to become Nature Positive by 2030 and to have restored and regenerated biodiversity by 2045. Achieving this vision requires a collaborative\, multi-sectoral approach to address the environmental challenges ahead. How do we broaden the scope of existing management frameworks to work beyond traditional\, independent management of land\, rivers and marine ecosystems.

SUMMARY:Scoping Workshop - How can we set thresholds for seafloor health that are both scientifically credible and practically usable?
DESCRIPTION:As pressures on our marine environments intensify\, there is a growing need for thresholds that can guide decision-making and support the achievement of Good Environmental Status (GES) under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). At the request of the EU (DG ENV)\, ICES is advancing technical work on threshold-setting for seafloor condition indicators (D6C3 and D6C5). Input from the scientific community is essential to ensure these thresholds are scientifically robust\, operational\, and applicable across diverse management contexts. \nWKD6SCOPE is a scoping workshop aimed at presenting\, compiling\, and documenting expert input on current threshold-setting methods\, their practical use\, and key knowledge gaps. It will bring together a broad range of perspectives to explore what makes thresholds usable\, how uncertainty and risk are managed\, and what is needed to support implementation across different regions\, habitats\, and pressure types. \nThe workshop also welcomes contributions from managers\, spatial planners\, policymakers\, regional sea conventions\, and competent authorities to explore what makes a threshold operation and acceptable\, considering both scientific robustness and policy relevance.
