SUMMARY:Free workshop - Shaping the future of harbour seal conservation in Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters
DESCRIPTION:As part of the #EIMR2026 workshop programme\, Gianlucca Gerich (MeyGen Tidal Project) and Dr. Ian Davies (Carronside Consultancy) will be hosting a workshop on Ecological Measures to Support Harbour Seal Conservation in PFOW in the Context of Tidal Stream Development. \nJoin this industry-led workshop\, which will bring together regulators\, scientists\, developers\, and NGOs to explore practical\, evidence-led ecological measures that could support harbour seal conservation alongside tidal stream development in PFOW. \nWhat to expect\n– Identification of realistic\, science-based measures with regional or population-level impact\n– Exploration of how these measures can be delivered in practice (from scale and monitoring to governance)\n– Build cross-sector alignment to inform future consenting under EIA and Habitats Regulations \nOutcome\n– A shared understanding of what works\, what’s feasible\, and where we go next\, helping to bridge the gap between conservation and renewable energy deployment. \nWho should attend?\n– Regulators\, marine mammal scientists\, renewables developers\, environmental consultants\, and NGOs working in PFOW. \n👉 Be part of the conversation shaping sustainable marine development. \n📅 Monday 13 April 2026\, 1pm start\n📍 Scottish Association for Marine Science\, Oban\, Scotland

SUMMARY:Marine Biodiversity Networking Fridays | MPAs
DESCRIPTION:On April 17\, 2026\, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM UTC+0\, we will host a special session with Dr Mark Costello focusing on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The session will highlight findings from the MPA Europe project\, which designed a network that is representative of all species\, climate resilient and ecologically coherent. The project shows that protecting 10 % and 30 % of European and adjacent seas could include 55 % and 79 % of all species\, respectively\, offering a scalable approach for local conservation planning. \nThe session will also address common misconceptions about MPAs. Myths include that fully protected MPAs are radical in limiting public access\, are expensive\, displace fishing efforts\, and don´t benefit fisheries\, pelagic species\, or help climate resilience. Other myths are that MPAs aim to protect biodiversity and that biodiversity is only harmed by commercial fishing. The experience worldwide is that fully protected (no fishing) areas reliably result in naturally restored biodiversity with spillover benefits to fisheries\, in contrast to partially protected areas.

SUMMARY:Workshop on implementation plans for the Nature Restoration Regulation
DESCRIPTION:As you may know\, national governments are currently drafting implementation plans for the Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR). Deadline for draft submissions to the European Commission: September of this year. As the NRR has an important marine component\, implementation plans also stretch to marine habitats\, including shellfish reefs. \nWe have observed that the implementation of the NRR in marine waters is seen as very challenging by government representatives working on it. We therefore believe that by bringing experts and regulators from various countries together on the topic of shellfish reef development will be beneficial to all involved. \nSo we have planned an international workshop on the topic\, on May 4 (10-13 CEST). \nIt will be informal\, so that all those present can freely exchange their ideas. We have consulted DG Environment about the initiative and received enthusiastic approval. If the workshop is seen as successful\, we may organize follow-up events\, since marine NRR-implementation for shellfish reefs poses a lot of challenges. \nThe workshop program is still in development\, but we will address the following questions:\n1. How to determine favorable reference areas for flat oyster reefs (or bivalve reefs in general) in various environments? What is the relation with the establishment of self-sustaining reefs\, also in various environments (nearshore/offshore)?\n2. Which reef development projects are already undertaken where? With which objectives and methods?\n3. Which are effective/state-of-the-art reef development methods? And what are (estimates of) associated costs (per m2 reef or per bivalve). \nRegulators from various countries will explain their approach in answering question 1. Philine and I will present the NORA data base as answer to question 2. The subject is policy-sensitive\, so participation will be by invitation only. \nIf you have expertise to:\n• reflect on the regulator approaches for question 1 and/or the NORA database for question 2;\n• give input to state-of-the art shellfish reef development methods.\nwe can give you the opportunity to take part in the meeting. \nIf so\, please send a message to:\n• hein.sas@noraeurope.eu or\n• Philine.Zu.Ermgassen@ed.ac.uk
