SUMMARY:Workshop on implementation plans for the Nature Restoration Regulation
DESCRIPTION:As you may know\, national governments are currently drafting implementation plans for the Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR). Deadline for draft submissions to the European Commission: September of this year. As the NRR has an important marine component\, implementation plans also stretch to marine habitats\, including shellfish reefs. \nWe have observed that the implementation of the NRR in marine waters is seen as very challenging by government representatives working on it. We therefore believe that by bringing experts and regulators from various countries together on the topic of shellfish reef development will be beneficial to all involved. \nSo we have planned an international workshop on the topic\, on May 4 (10-13 CEST). \nIt will be informal\, so that all those present can freely exchange their ideas. We have consulted DG Environment about the initiative and received enthusiastic approval. If the workshop is seen as successful\, we may organize follow-up events\, since marine NRR-implementation for shellfish reefs poses a lot of challenges. \nThe workshop program is still in development\, but we will address the following questions:\n1. How to determine favorable reference areas for flat oyster reefs (or bivalve reefs in general) in various environments? What is the relation with the establishment of self-sustaining reefs\, also in various environments (nearshore/offshore)?\n2. Which reef development projects are already undertaken where? With which objectives and methods?\n3. Which are effective/state-of-the-art reef development methods? And what are (estimates of) associated costs (per m2 reef or per bivalve). \nRegulators from various countries will explain their approach in answering question 1. Philine and I will present the NORA data base as answer to question 2. The subject is policy-sensitive\, so participation will be by invitation only. \nIf you have expertise to:\n• reflect on the regulator approaches for question 1 and/or the NORA database for question 2;\n• give input to state-of-the art shellfish reef development methods.\nwe can give you the opportunity to take part in the meeting. \nIf so\, please send a message to:\n• hein.sas@noraeurope.eu or\n• Philine.Zu.Ermgassen@ed.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Marine Biodiversity Networking Fridays | MPAs
DESCRIPTION:On April 17\, 2026\, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM UTC+0\, we will host a special session with Dr Mark Costello focusing on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The session will highlight findings from the MPA Europe project\, which designed a network that is representative of all species\, climate resilient and ecologically coherent. The project shows that protecting 10 % and 30 % of European and adjacent seas could include 55 % and 79 % of all species\, respectively\, offering a scalable approach for local conservation planning. \nThe session will also address common misconceptions about MPAs. Myths include that fully protected MPAs are radical in limiting public access\, are expensive\, displace fishing efforts\, and don´t benefit fisheries\, pelagic species\, or help climate resilience. Other myths are that MPAs aim to protect biodiversity and that biodiversity is only harmed by commercial fishing. The experience worldwide is that fully protected (no fishing) areas reliably result in naturally restored biodiversity with spillover benefits to fisheries\, in contrast to partially protected areas.

SUMMARY:Scientific meeting: Marine biodiversity loss\, fishing\, and climate change
DESCRIPTION:On 8 – 9 December 2025\, a scientific discussion meeting will be held at the Royal Society in London\, on the topic of marine biodiversity loss. \nThe meeting will be led by Professor Richard Sanders from the Norwegian Research Centre\, Professor Alex Poulton from Heriot Watt University\, Professor Stephanie Henson from the National Oceanography Centre\, Dr Emma Cavan from Imperial College London and Professor Alessandro Tagliabue from the University of Liverpool. \nThe twin crises of biodiversity loss and rapid climate change are often considered as inextricably linked. This is a perspective primarily developed based on terrestrial systems. \nIn the ocean this linkage has been largely overlooked. At this meeting\, speakers and attendees will address this gap by considering the relationships between ocean biodiversity loss\, climate change and food security. \nThere will be a poster session on Monday 8 December 2025. Attendees can apply to present a poster. \nThis meeting is free to attend and is intended for researchers in relevant fields. \nAdvance registration is essential. In-person and online attendance is available. \nMore information about the speakers\, programme and how to register for this meeting can be found on the Royal Society website.

SUMMARY:Surfacing and Mitigating the “Hidden Risks” of AI Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Learn more about the novel framework to anticipate and mitigate AI risks arising from human-AI interaction developed by the Cabinet Office Behavioural Science Team. Listen to an overview of the BR-UK AI Resources Repository and learn about the progress developing a Statement on AI by BR-UK. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \n  \nAbstract: Current AI safety discourse disproportionately centres on highly salient technical risks such as algorithm bias and hallucinations. While these concerns merit attention\, they overlook a fundamental truth we’ve learned from other safety-critical fields like aviation and healthcare: catastrophic risks often arise from the way humans interact with technology\, rather than from the technology itself. \nThe Cabinet Office Behavioural Science Team has developed a novel framework to anticipate and mitigate AI risks arising from human-AI interaction. Rather than relying exclusively on technical safeguards and disclaimers\, this methodology expands risk mitigation beyond inherent LLM limitations (e.g.\, bias\, susceptibility to jailbreaking) to mitigate those risks that emerge from well-intentioned AI use. The framework also shows how seemingly innocuous micro-level decisions accumulate to generate systemic macro risks (e.g. labour market discrimination) that would remain invisible through conventional risk assessment lenses until harms had already occurred. \nThe framework has informed the risk-managed deployment of an internal Cabinet Office AI system and carries implications for how AI risk is managed globally. The work demonstrates that effective AI governance requires expertise beyond machine learning specialists. The contemporary AI implementation landscape\, however\, continues to frame challenges predominantly through technological and economic paradigms rather than socio-technical ones. While major AI organisations employ ethicists to “align” AI with human values\, philosophical frameworks alone will be insufficient for identifying and mitigating latent behavioural risks. This oversight risks undermining the very efficiency and impact that AI promises to deliver. \nSpeakers: Holly Marquez\, Senior Behavioural Scientist\, Cabinet Office\, Dr Moira Nicolson\, Behavioural Scientist\, Cabinet Office\, Dr Amy Rodger\, BR-UK Research Fellow\, University of Edinburgh and Dr Maggie Guanyu Yang\, BR-UK Research Fellow\, UCL. \nChair:  Professor Susan Michie\, BR-UK Co-Director
