FMRI Science Requirements Framework Roadshows

NERC, through the Future Marine Research Infrastructure (FMRI) programme, is seeking to develop and deliver a research infrastructure that enables the UK’s marine science aspirations and ambitions.

It is important to articulate these science requirements clearly, thereby enabling priorities, interdependencies, synergies, trade-offs, and consequences to be considered in context. The FMRI Science Requirements Framework will capture and present this information to inform programme decisions. The Science Requirements Framework will be structured around five marine sciences ‘Grand Challenges’:

  • The role of the ocean in a changing climate
  • Protecting biodiversity and ocean health
  • Marine pollution: its sources, distribution and solutions
  • Strengthening resilience to natural hazards and extreme events
  • Sustainable blue economy and ecosystem services.

A series of roadshow workshops (in person) and other events (NOCA AGM (June 2024) and the Challenger Society Conference (Sept. 24) will provide the opportunity to contribute to identifying the requirements for sustained, experimental and discovery capabilities.

The FMRI Programme is seeking SRF ‘Champions’ at all career stages who can support the development of the Science Requirements Framework at the workshops. Learn more or apply now.

Development of the Science Requirements Framework is being led by the FMRI Lead Scientist, Dr Katy Hill, and overseen by an editorial group appointed for the strategic national roles. Further information about the FMRI Science Requirement Framework.

Locations and dates of roadshows and to register Places are limited. Travel and subsistence for participation in the roadshow workshops is not covered by the FMRI programme. For more information, please contact the FMRI programme: fmri@noc.ac.uk
