part-time lecturer in environmental microbiology (maternity cover) – Heriot Watt University

Heriot Watt have a vacancy for maternity leave cover on a P/T casual basis from Sept 2023 to March 2024. It may suit a researcher PDRA, RA, more experienced research student.

Requirement:

Delivery of an existing Honours-level course (1 Module)

Course outline:

  • Introduction to (environmental) microbial ecology (role of microbes on the planet, the ecological role of viruses, traditional microbiological methods, why molecular methods)
  • Basics of molecular ecology (functional genes, primers, probes, phylogenetic analysis, online tools…)
  • Molecular methods (cloning, microarrays, fingerprinting, qPCR, dPCR, FISH, high-throughput sequencing, omics, stable isotope probing, MAR-FISH, Raman-FISH, nanoSIMS, single-cell techniques) – focus on what questions can we answer, advantages, limitations, things to consider when choosing a method, so all more conceptually than really into protocols, and with plenty of research examples
