Since the 1950s the production and use of plastics has increased exponentially. Marine plastic pollution (MPP) is a global phenomenon with significant impacts on the natural environment and economic well-being. The control and reduction of MPP is a public good, which requires the need for international coordination of actions. This talk provides some insights into the potential economic benefits of cooperative MPP management in the North Atlantic Ocean, and discusses its usefulness in informing current international negotiations in the context of the global plastic treaty.
