Building a bottom-up network that includes people from different cultures, sectors, disciplines, and time zones poses unique challenges. How do you build trust among people who have never met? How do you get people to take the reins to lead the organization? How do you deal with different languages, ways of working, meeting cultures, and more? This brief talk will introduce the Ocean Knowledge Action Network, a bottom-up and self-organising network of ocean scientists and non-science professionals, all working to better co-design ocean science for sustainable development.
