UHI Shetland is pleased to have secured funding from the Viking Community Fund to deliver an exciting new two-year whale and dolphin monitoring programme around Shetland.
The project will involve twice-monthly marine mammal photo-identification surveys, gathering valuable data on the whales and dolphins that visit Shetland’s internationally important waters. This work will improve understanding of the distribution, movements and long-term population trends of local cetacean species, providing important evidence to support future conservation and management.
The programme will also create opportunities for local volunteers and community groups to take part in survey trips alongside experienced researchers. Participants will gain practical experience in spotting, identifying and recording marine mammals at sea, while contributing directly to ongoing scientific research.
This initiative reflects the value of combining research, community engagement and skills development to help protect and better understand Shetland’s unique marine environment.
